Low self-esteem can cause a host of problems. It makes you more prone to depression, can interfere with your personal and professional lives and negatively impact the way others perceive you. If you find your self-worth is often down in the dumps, here are a few ways you can give it a much-needed boost.
1. Daily affirmations
It may seem silly at first, but saying positive phrases to yourself every day can truly influence the way you feel about who you are. You don’t have to repeat them out loud in a mirror to yourself each morning, but if you memorize a few positive phrases, you can whip them out when you find you start to beat yourself up.
Tip: Tailor your affirmation to target what’s making you feel low. For instance, if you feel you are unable to accomplish anything, say something like, “I can achieve whatever I put my mind to.”
2. Stand tall
Your posture can be a direct reflection of your self-esteem. If you find yourself hunched over or constantly staring at the ground when you walk, then you may want to do some exercises to boost your posture. Standing tall will not only make you feel more confident, but it will let others around you know that you value and respect yourself.
Tip: Pretend there is an invisible string attached to the top of your head and your shoulders constantly pulling you gently upward toward the ceiling. This will help keep your neck straight and your shoulders squared.
3. Take a mental health day
Working too hard can have a big impact on how you feel about your self-worth, but a day off to simply rest your mind can bring you back up to speed. During this respite, focus on doing things that make you feel happy, whether that be exercising, eating a good meal or simply spending time with friends and family.
Tip: Plan ahead for your mental health day. Choose a time when you know you will be able to focus on you and won’t be tempted by work distractions. In other words, don’t take a mental health day when you have a stressful presentation the same week.
4. Give yourself a makeover
Your personal appearance can often be a factor in your self-esteem. Taking some time to beautify yourself can make a difference. A trip to the salon for a new haircut is one option, or you could schedule an appointment at aplastic surgery clinic to address some of the larger issues that have been bothering you about your appearance. This doesn’t mean you have to sign up for a major surgery – Botox injections are quick, but their results can have a huge impact.
Tip: Ask your surgeon about other quick and easy aesthetic options, such as microdermabrasion or a chemical peel.
